STEEL AND GLASS SKYLIGHT

In the heart of Milan, within RH Milano, a striking glazed roof structure defines the restaurant space located on the lower-ground floor, allowing natural light to filter down from above and creating a visual connection between the interior and the surrounding environment.

Vetreria Busnelli managed the entire skylight delivery process, from executive design and structural sizing to bespoke manufacturing and on-site installation, developing a dedicated construction system to accommodate the project’s distinctive geometry.

The main technical challenge lies in the curved configuration of the roof, which requires precise integration between the load-bearing steel structure and the glazed surfaces. The system comprises structural beams, roof support elements, perimeter and connecting metal profiles, cover caps and complementary components, all designed and manufactured to ensure geometric continuity, structural integrity and precise component interfaces.

Particular attention was devoted to the manufacture and integration of the curved glass panels, connected to the flat roof glazing and the metal framework. The combination of glazed elements with different geometries, transitions and steel profiles required accurate dimensional coordination of all components, from setting out and defining dimensions through to manufacturing, assembly and on-site installation.

The steel structure, featuring a dark finish and a regular arrangement of profiles, defines the architectural rhythm of the skylight and follows the development of the curved surfaces. The transparency of the glass enhances natural light and the perception of the space below, transforming the roof into a central architectural feature of the project.

The result is a complex, fully bespoke architectural roof system, in which the steel framework, profiles, cover caps and glazed elements have been developed to work together as an integrated system.
